Who the Autocracy IsOne of the newest stellar nations, the Archosaur monarchy wasn't even known 10 years ago, but it has since quickly ascended the ranks to earn the title of "minor stellar nation." Like many such minor-stellar nations, it is associated with a colorful leader and an unusual method of social organization, but what makes it truly stand out is the population - mostly neogenic dinosaur uplifts, along with a number of dinosaur therianthropes, pods, and the like, which also earns it the nickname of "the Cold-Blood Republic." Under the command of Philosopher-King Eudoxius Archytas, the self-proclaimed "Son of Tiamat" (also the only self-proclaimed uplifted T-Rex in the Verge and Bleed, although he's very likely a pod or cybershell of some kind), the Autocracy is an experiment in social organization and structure that harkens back to the earliest days of philosophy and political history.
Autocracy IDealsBeing a small stellar nation, the Autocracy has a relatively unified culture to it. The bulk of the cultural influence appears to have come from Plato's Politeia, better known as the Republic, and what parts of the culture that aren't designed to model after Republic have a very technocratic sheen to them, imported through the Sinosphere. There's a number of parallels with the Autocracy and the People's Republic of China specifically in terms of culture, with the local religion being a sort of philosophical precept devoted to outlining where a person belongs in the hierarchy (similar to Confucianism and Chinese Legalism), to the strong sense of collective action, all of which tie back into the Republic that is used to align the culture. It doesn't have many worlds under its control - it only has three systems that it controls - but the Autocracy is expanding economically and everyone is working together to ensure it does
Autocracy StructureThe structure of the autocracy is relatively straight forward, since it's based so heavily on Socrates Republic. And being based on Plato's book, the different aspects of the culture are designed to represent the various aspects of the tripartite soul; this unification of the state and the soul of the individual is referred to Monotism. At the top of the society is the Philosopher-Kings, who aren't just intellectual leaders but also moral ones as well, representing the reason reigning over appetite and spirit. The Philosopher-King is king Eudoxis Archytas I, the Son of Tiamat, the grand reptile whose body creates reality. Below the philosopher king is the auxiliaries, who are the defenders of the state and whose souls are controlled by spirit, which gives them the ability to defend the state from dangers on the outside. Under them are the artisans, whose souls are ruled by appetite, which drives them to create objects (in particular, to create new types of intellectual property). Each class of citizen has the distinctive duty to remain loyal to their state and the cause of their state, acting with the Platonic Code of Honor in mind. Beyond this caste order, the auxiliaries are divided up amongst governorships. The state is not divided into any territories, so any governorship is actually a temporary position, usually assigned to the most talented auxiliary until the government can re-organized in a region and then reunified with the parent government. In this way, there is no real division of the state, and the state remains whole, which a healthy state should be.

Reptilioid Conspracies and Dinosauroid EmpiresOne can't study the various writings and thoughts of philosophers, historians, and political scientists from the Autocracy for long before stumbling head over heals into the reptiloid conspiracy theory. At some point, the intelligentsia of the Autocracy decided that there was not only veracity to the conspiracy theory, but that it also dove-tailed perfectly with their understanding of the world. According to them, dinosaurs developed an advanced civilization sometime in the Jurassic period, on Pangaea (which they called Lemuria), and they eventually left Earth for the stars in the Cretaceous, detonating a bomb to make it look like an asteroid hit and then wiping away their civilization so the next species (the warmbloods) could have a clean slate. Some even claim that evolved dinosauroids were the Lemurian root-race described by Helena Blavatsky. However, a number of these sapient dinosaurs returned as the warmbloods evolved and then assumed command over the warmblood civilization, guiding the warmbloods towards true civilization and eventually towards space travel. This version is considerably more benevolent than the usual reptiloid conspiracy theory, and it notably lacks the anti-Semitic undertones that characterizes many of the New World Order/Lizard People conspiracy theories (which still thrive in some corners of the Verge and Bleed). That the origin of the conspiracy theory, a mixture of the writings of H. P. Lovecraft, Robert E Howard (of Conan the Barbarian fame), as well as a hoax by George Warren Shufelt during the Great Depression, is well known has no affect on these claims. |
Autocracy History
The Autocracy does not have a long history and much of it is lost to history. It's strongly suspected that Euxodis is not an uplifted Tyrannosaurus like he claims to be; rather, many suspect that he's actually just a human, AGI, or neo-animal ego that has been uploaded into a specialized pod that is designed to look like a Tyrannosaurus rex. There are a handful of potential candidates that emerge during the utopian period, with the most likely candidate being the AGI paleontologist Kyriaki Panopoulou. Kyriaki lived during the early Utopian Period where she studied prehistoric life on Earth and wrote a number of papers based on the pseudo-scientific idea that life in the Silurian period had developed an advanced civilization that no trace reamined of, before she left during the height of the Utopian Period. She was known to upload herself into cybershells and pods that were designed to look like dinosaurs. Another potential candidate is the Platonic philosopher Tomas Bergström-Chukwuma; he lead a brief Platonic revival during the height of the Utopian Era from Alpha Centauri, and was known to be interested in genetics and reviving extinct species; he played a role in helping Alternty Biotech revive the t'sa, for instance.
Regardless who Euxodis is, what is known is that he claims to have arrived on Dikaiosun to find the ruins of ancient civilization that he, after extensive research and information collecting was able to tie to an advanced species of dinosaur from Earth. This lead Euxodis to the conclusion that the "warmbloods" weren't the first civilization on Earth and that dinosaurs were the first civilization and that they had laid down the wormhole network after they left Earth. Upon having this revelation, Euxodis created the Autocracy, through automation, began the process of creating populations of neo-dinosaurs (mostly neo-troodons, since that was all that existed at the time, which appears to have been the height of the Utopian Era or near the end of it. However, some scattered records indicate that a Brinker colony set out to colonize Iota Crateris in the Utopian Period; a much more likely story is that Euxodis is an outgrowth of the brinker colony or that he overthrew the government in a coup and established himself as Philosopher King and set about replacing the warmbloods with coldbloods. Very little evidence exists to back to this up, however, outside of the scattered references to a Brinker colony.
The Autocracy first appears in the records of history during the Ascension Crisis, when a ship fleeting from Aratis through the wormhole network parked in the relatively unexplored system of HIP 57274 and detected signs of an undiscovered civilization in Iota Crateris and the neighboring star, HD 100203. They didn't explore; rather, they assumed it was alien and not wanting to draw the attention of aliens, they left the system. The Autocracy wouldn't appear again until after the Verge Consortium Civil War, when an automated fleet from the Australis Union, following up on the earlier report from HIP 57274, entered the Autocracy from Porrima. The Verge Consortium discovered them shortly after that, from Gamma Crateris, and in short order, the most isolated stellar nation was brought into the fold. They have been a part of civilization for roughly five years now, and are still attempting to figure out where their loyalties lie - the Verge Consortium or the Australis Union. This was highlighted by how incompatible their economy was with the greater Verge and Bleed, resulting in a massive drain, and with the liberal influence form the Verge Consortium, their population has slowly began to drain a well, leading some to suspect that they may end up siding with the Austrailis Union and shutting their borders.

Autocracy Divisions
The autocracy is a fairly unified state, without a set number of territories that are even worthy of note. However, regardless how many times the Autocracy reorganizes, three general and separate entities usually emerge, each one focused on a separate star. These are not unique in any way nor are they considered separate entities. However, these are the currently accepted three; they have existed for long enough that they developed their own flag, although they could cease to exist at any moment without any warning, at the whim of the Philosopher King.
Autocracy Culture
The autocracy has a relatively unified culture; even for a Stellar Nation, the culture is amazingly unified. Of course, this is to be expected when the population of your state is barely large enough to fill a late Interstellar Era city. While there are a considerable number of subcultures, all of them are clearly part of the same cohesive major culture, or parent culture, which dominants the culture of the Autocracy. This hasn't stopped some sociologists from attempting to categorize their culture, however; they note that there are roughly four large, subcultural groups each one speaking one of the four official languages, divided amongst the three stars: the Kalliopolian and Kithean subcultures are on Dikaiosun, while the Vitalidian subculture is on Braggi, and the Vefnian subculture, by far the smallest and most distinctive (predominately because there are a sizeable number of them who are actually Sufis or Sufi adjacent), in HD 100203.
Autocracy SociologyEconomically, the Autocracy follows a bizarre type of highly centralized post-scarcity dirigisme that is not incredibly productive. The population provide the state with IP and the state then turns around and gives that intellectual property to everyone; however, because the Philosopher-King is governed by "reason," things are made illegal with no apparent cause other than "reason dictates it." This emphasis on "reason" allows for the Philosopher-King to meddle in the economy in sometimes disastrous ways, resulting in a relatively weak post-scarcity economy.
Ontologically, they are staunchly ontologically conservative. Digital worlds are not real worlds and digital beings are not real beings, and it's a mistake to treat them as such. True transcendence happens through the study of Pythagorean secrets, which is what the various Platonic and Pythagorean mystery cults, who study Glassmaker and Stoneburner ruins (and in general are a headache for both the ASAI and the Archimedes Society - one of the few things both groups agree on is that these mystery cults are massive pain to deal with), are attempting to find. |
Platonic and Pythagorean CultsThe culture of the Autocracy is shaped by a dozen or so competing mystery cults, which are often themed around Pythagoreanism or Platonicism. Pythagorean mystery cults hold that the answers to the universe, including quantum theory, can be found in common geometry; geometry is the key to understanding everything. The rule that non-Euclidean geometry plays is often disputed, causing a general split between them into the "Paleo-Pythagoreans," who reject that non-Euclidean geometry is even a thing, and "Neo-Pythagoreans," who accept non-Euclidean geometry and work to find ways to integrate it. Both broad groups tend to devote themselves to the study of mathematics almost as a ritual, but it isn't any sort of productive understanding of mathematics, since they are retreading discoveries made thousands of years. Platonicism, meanwhile, focuses on analyzing the writings and teachings of Plato. Most believe that he was simply recording conversations that Socrates and his interlocutors had said (leading them to believe things like Atlantis was real), although there are constant bickering over just how literally Plato should be taken. There is sometimes overlap between the two groups, although neither can really be considered a "religion" by any conventional sense. Both groups hold that their respective philosophers - Plato. Socrates, and Pythagoras - were all actually ancient shapeshifting dinosaurs left behind by the Lemurian Dinosaur species, who laid helped lay the groundwork for the "warmbloods" in order to encourage them to become more civilized. Naturally, this is disputed by almost every philosopher and historian in the Verge and Bleed, but of course the warmbloods would like to think they can do things for themselves; who doesn't? It takes a cold-blood to know the truth. |
Culture and Memes in the Autocracy
There are a handful of well known and established memes in the Autocracy.
Ananeonism
Type: Political Philosophy
Ananeonism arises out lacertism; where lacertism asserts that the dinosaurs were the first tool using species in the Verge and Bleed before they left Earth (although they keep observers behind, who were capable of shapeshifting, to help guide any subsequent species), ananeonism holds that it is the job of the current intelligent species from Earth to abandon the planet completely, after healing it, so that the next species may evolve on it. To this end, Eudoxius spends a surprising amount of time trying to influence policy regarding Earth and is active within the Reclaimer movement, with the understanding that once Earth is repaired back to its pristine glory, all sapient species will abandon Earth and leave it to develop the next wave of intelligent life in the galaxy.
Gimonos
Type: Religious Philosophy/Political Philosophy
Gimonos is another byproduct of lacertism. Gimonos essentially rejects the idea that any planet other than Earth is capable of developing intelligent life. All of the signs for intelligent life are either life that evolved on Earth before and left or are mistakes, with the most common lifeforms being dinosaurs. Thus, all of the architecture of the Glassmakers, the Stoneburners, and the other ancient species is said to be the work of highly advanced transapient dinosaurs who surpassed the physical world and transcended into something greater. Gimonos is an extreme position, but it's also a defining position of the Autocracy, and it's why the Autocracy is so interested in healing and then abandoning Earth.
Lacertism
Type: Political Philosophy/Fashion Movement/Artistic Movement
Lacertism is based on an old paper published in during the early Interplanetary Era, and before that, the writings of a Canadian paleontologist who designed what an intelligent dinosaur species might look like. Lacertism holds that dinosaurs evolved to intelligence and advanced civilization before the "warmbloods" did and thus, the galaxy and the neighboring galaxies belong to the dinosaurs. Dinosaurs (and to a lesser extent, avians and reptiles, including the t'sa) are considered superior beings to the "warmbloods" who took so long to evolve, and it is the underlying philosophy for the Autocracy. This superior nature is why dinosaurs and reptiles are better adapted to Socrates' ideal state when humans are not, and it also holds that while they evolved first, they did leave behind a number of shape-shifting dinosaur people who would rule over humanity, guiding them towards a better future where they could be productive citizens in the new order. As a fashion movement, it encourages biosculpting to look reptilian or reptilian in nature (they are often confused for the Yuan-ti or Nagas of the Borealis Technocracy, or with reptilian rianths, but the subcultures are vastly different), and as an artistic movement, it elevates the reptilian form, and encourages artists to express order and structure in a methodical fashion.
Monotism
Type: Political Philosophy/Economic Philosophy/Social Organization
Monotism is the name given to the philosophy outlined by Socrates; the state is everything, and everything is given to the state. Monotism justifies the caste system that exists, explains why the various classes exist and even connects the health of the state to the health of the overall souls of the people who live within it. Since the soul is governed by three parts, the state must likewise be governed by three parts. It also outlines what those three are, as well, and proper code of ethics that one must maintain when interacting with the state. In short, the state and the people are mirrors of one another, and the soul of the populace is directly impacted by the soul of the state, and vice versa. As an economic philosophy, it is a type of post-scarcity dirigisme, but it's one where the populace provide their intellectual property to the state who then uses that as a means to stabilize itself and provides it back to the population. The Artisans are encouraged to unit into small hypercorporations, which focus much of their effort on producing goods and services to sell to the population and the state. Meanwhile, this ideology also encourages state ownership of children; fertilized eggs are the property of the state, who raises the children in hatcheries away from their parents.
Neo-Kiche
Type: Architectural Style/Artistic Movement/Fashion
Neo-Kiche is a bizarre movement whose origins remain a mystery; some refer to it as Mayan Revivalism but the Autocracy has zero connection with Mayan culture. Despite this fact, the artistic and architectural movement promotes the widespread adoption of Mayan-style architecture and Mesoamerican style dress, over the classical Greek-influenced style of dress and fashion that reigned for much of the early period of the stellar nation. It has revolutionized fashion and architecture and created a type of hideous incongruity in their cities where newer parts are constructed to look like Mayan temple cities attached to neo-classical Greek cities while the population wear a mix of Mayan jewelry and headdresses and Greek-influenced togas and similar garb. This has even translated into an artistic style, where those who work in it create paintings that look like Mayan hieroglyphics, and the Autocracy has even brought in "warmbloods" who are of Kiche/Mayan ancestry or are familiar with the Mayans and Aztecs to help them revive the alphabet, which they plan to then apply to their variant of Greek. Sociologists are still trying to figure out where this stands on the "cultural appropriation" scale.
Slaanism
Type: Architectural Style
Slaanism is more common on Braggi than it is on Dikaiosun, and it was pioneered by a group of avant-garde Ursan Dutch speaking neo-dinosaurs. Deriving its name from the Dutch word slaan, meaning "punch" or "hit," Slaanism is an type of brutalist architectural style that is blunt and entirely direct; there are no metaphors, no flourishes, and no niceties with Slaanism; as a style, it punches the user in the face with its utilitarian nature, and leaves little regard for what its ultimate purpose is. The style has proven rather popular and has gradually supplanted the traditionalist Greek architectural style that existed on Braggi but is often derided for its ugly appearance.
