Calamarine-series 332 Points
The Calamarine-series is a design out of Ecowave-Symphonia that turns a Humboldt Squid into a pod. Sometimes referred to as Diablo Rojo (the Spanish name for the Humboldt; it means Red Devil), the Calamarine has a long and slender mantle with a number of very flexible tendrils that are capable of manipulating objects and devices under water. Without extensive life support, the pod cannot survive on land, and its invertebrate nature means that outside of the water it's next to useless, anyway. The Calamarine-series is popular on water worlds, where there are usually a handful of these pods waiting around, either to be remotely piloted by humans or to be inhabited by AGIs who need them to do work underwater. Human digitals tend to avoid the pods, since they find it difficult to manipulate the arms, but Astropus and Neo-Octopus digitals tend to slip right into the shell, and so they and AGIs who are modeled after them and modeled after squid are the preferred wearers of this shell by many businesses, institutes, and governments who keep them around. The template below represents the basic, Humboldt Calamarine. Attribute Modifiers: ST+2 (SM, -20%) [16]; DX+3 [60]; HT+2 [20]. Secondary Characteristic Modifiers: HP+3 (Size, -20%) [5]; SM+2. Advantages: Basic Biomods [19]; Chameleon 2 [10]; Constriction Attack [15]; DR 2 (Can’t Wear Armor, -40%; Tough Skin, -40%) [2]; Doesn’t Breathe (Gills, Breathe underwater only) [0]; Enhanced Move 1/2 (Water) [10]; Enhanced Move +2 (Water; Limited Endurance, 2 seconds, -20%; Takes Recharge, 5 seconds, -10%) [28]; Extra-Flexible Arms [10]; Extra Arms 6 (ExtraFlexible, +50%) [90]; Extra Arms +2 (Extra-Flexible, +50%; Long, +1 SM, +100%) [50]; Night Vision 8 [8]; Obscure 8 (Vision; Persistent, +40%; Only in Water, -20%; Limited Use, 4/day, -20%) [16]; Peripheral Vision [15]; Pressure Support 1 [5]; Teeth (Sharp Beak) [1]. Perks: Accessory (Tiny Computer) [1]. Disadvantages: Bad Grip 2 [-10]; Cold-Blooded (Threshold 50°) [-5]; Increased Life Support (Massive – Requires enough water to support its body) [-10]; Invertebrate [-20]; No Depth Perception [-15]; Pod Body [-4]; No Legs (Aquatic) [0]; Restricted Diet (fish or crustacean meat, Very Common) [-10]; Social Stigma (Pod) [-10]. Availability: $110,000 + computer. LC3. Models Calamarine "Colossus" (+280 Points): The Colossus is one of the largest pods in existence, just shy of bio-buildings or some larger, experimental biological ships. Using M. hamiltoni genes - genes from the so-called "Colossal" or "Antarctic" squid - the Colossus reaches the truly magnificent size of almost 50 foot, weighing just north of of 1,300 pounds. Their massive eyes are about 16 inches in diameter, and are capable of glowing in the dark. They are also capable of bioluminescence. Pods of this size are relatively rare, since they're so hard to transport, and a water station may only have one pod of this type. Adjust ST to ST +60 (SM, -50%) [300] and add SM +5, Temperature Tolerance (Cold) 5 [5], and delete Cold-Blooded [+5]. Also increase Increased Life Support to [-30]. Add Luminescence [1]. It isn't uncommon for one to have their entire mantle converted into a hollow area to store cargo (or people), but this isn't included in the base model design. $1,800,000 + computer. LC2. 612 points Calamarine "Reefer" (-110 Points): The Reefer is a much smaller pod version of the standard Calamarine; instead of using a Humboldt squid, as the name implies, it uses a Reef Squid, instead. Reef Squid are incredibly small, averaging only about 10 inches in length, but make for excellent underwater stealth models or as a fairly cheap alternative to the regular Calamarine, although it requires much more food. Delete ST +2 [-16] and add ST -8 [-80], SM -6, and Increased Consumption 3 [-30] $2,000. 221 points Cloudskates 222 Points
Cloudskates are large pods, derived from a mix of mostly human and stingray DNA, along with a number of cetacean and neogenic traits that adapt them to survival in the upper cloud decks of gas giants. They have an inbuilt ballast system that allows them to adjust their altitude, and they feature two biological jets that allows them to accelerate quickly through the clouds if need be (or they can glide on thermals and fly normally). The Cloudskate resembles a large stingray, although they have human like arms that emerge from their pectoral muscles that are capable of manipulating objects. However, since they lack legs, they effectively cannot move around on a surface and must be tethered in an interior hanger where they can float free when not in use. A long tail drags behind them, and thick layers of insulating blubber work to keep the Cloudskate warm. Cloudskates are commonly used for research purposes on gas giants; they're very common on Lyre, where the entire gas giant is a massive alien megastructure and the Cloudskates can be puppeted or flown around the exterior and even into the interior (although there are certain places that the Cloudskates can't go, given their 15' fin-span). It should be noted that because they use a lighter than air mechanism to stay aloft, they can technically fly in almost any atmosphere, including Earth-based ones, and a fair number of meteorologists use them to study weather patterns on Earth-like planets as well. Interestingly, it's NanoSysBio who produces this pod, not Ecowave-Symphonia, as some might assume. Attribute Modifiers: ST+2 (SM, -20%) [16]; DX+3 [60]; HT+2 [20]. Secondary Characteristic Modifiers: HP+3 (Size, -20%) [5]; SM+2. Advantages: Basic Biomods [19]; Chameleon 2 [10]; DR 2 (Can’t Wear Armor, -40%; Tough Skin, -40%) [2]; Doesn’t Breathe (Oxygen Storage x200, -20%) [14]; Flight (Lighter than Air, -10%; Winged, -25%) [26]; Enhanced Move 1/2 (Air) [10]; Enhanced Move +2 (Air; Limited Endurance, 2 seconds, -20%; Takes Recharge, 5 seconds, -10%) [28]; Infravision [10]; Peripheral Vision [15]; Pressure Support 2 [10]; Temperature Tolerance (Cold) 10 [10]. Perks: Accessory (Tiny Computer) [1]. Disadvantages: Pod Body [-4]; No Legs (Aerial) [0]; Restricted Diet (exotic nutrients, Common) [-20]; Social Stigma (Pod) [-10]. Availability: $110,000 + computer. LC3. Chickcharnie
107 Points Named after the mythic owl species from the Bahamas, the Chickcharnie looks like a humanoid owl, with arms instead of wings that end in hands. It has large fixed eyes and excellent senses, like a real owl, although unlike a real owl, it's incapable of flight. However, the feather-covered arms do allow it to slow its descent, so long as there is enough time and a thick enough atmosphere for do so. Also unlike a real owl, they can twist their head 180-degrees, mostly because their vision is fixed. The pod is popular with Neo-Avian digitals, although for human digitals the hardest thing to adapt to is having to twist one's head rather than simply moving one's eyes. Despite this, the pod is popular because of its senses; while there are certainly better cybershells out there for senses, the Chickcharnie pod is often much cheaper, and for the price, a person could do worse. Furthermore, despite being a pod, few are as freaked out by the Chickcharnie as they are by some other cryptopods (or even some other pods), owing to the large nature of the eyes and face, and the fact that many read it as "friendly." Attribute Modifiers: ST- 2 [-20]; DX+2 [40]. Secondary Characteristic Modifiers: Per+2 [10]. Advantages: Acute Hearing +2 [4]; Acute Vision +2 [4]; Basic Biomods [19]; Catfall (Parachute, -20%) [8]; Claws (Sharp Claws) [5]; Parabolic Hearing 4 [16]; Peripheral Vision [15];Telescopic Vision 4 [20]; Teeth (Sharp Beak) [1]; Temperature Tolerance 2 [2]. Perks: Accessory (Tiny Computer) [1]; Feathers [1]. Disadvantages: Bad Grip 1 [-5]; Pod Body [-4]; Social Stigma (Pod) [-10]. Features: Can rotate head 180-degrees; Reflective Eyes; Tail. Availability: $1,500 + computer. LC3. Chupacabra 89 Points
Named after the infamous cryptid from Latin America, the Chupacabra is a small - about 3' to 4' tall - reptilian kangaroo creature with leathery gray-green skin and spines that emerge from its back. The eyes have a reddish eyeshine to them, a result of the night vision. The creature also has a dog-like snout, forked tongue, and several keen senses, although they are different from the senses of the Chickcharnie. Unlike the classic monster, it lacks the carnivorous diet and the bloodlust; the standard Chupacabra pod is capable of surviving on an omnivorous diet. It's also designed so it lacks the bad smell that the legendary version supposedly has. The Chupacabra pod is a niche pod. Some Neo-Dog and Neo-Bear digitals may like it because of its improved smell, which closely matches their natural sense of smell, and they enjoy the fast ground move, but the pod is niche at best and often regarded as a monster in most areas. Attribute Modifiers: ST-3 [-30]; DX+2 [40]; HT+2 [20]. Secondary Characteristic Modifiers: SM -1; Per+2 [10]; Basic Speed+0.25 [5]. Advantages: Acute Taste and Smell +1 [2]; Basic Biomods [19]; Blunt Claws [3]; Damage Resistance 1 (Flexible, -20%) [4]; Discriminatory Smell [15]; Enhanced Move 1/2 (Ground) [10]; Night Vision 3 [3]; Peripheral Vision [15]; Reduced Consumption 2 (Cast-Iron Stomach, -50%) [2]; Short Spines (Back Only, -50%) [1]; Super Jump 1 [10]; Vibration Sense (Air) [10]. Perks: Accessory (Tiny Computer) [1]; Scales. [1] Disadvantages: Bad Grip 1 [-5]; Monstrous (Humans only, -20%) [-18]; Pod Body [-4]; Short Arms (Two arms) [-10]; Social Stigma (Monster) [-15]. Features: Reflective Eyes. Availability: $75,000 + computer. LC3. Devilfish-series
95 points The Devilfish (also called paholanien or pesce diavolo) are among the better-known Imperium aquatic pods. The actual genetic material is derived from a type of communal animal that lives under the ice of one of the planets in the Mors system (the world that the Raakki are from); these weird, hybrid manta ray-squids are exceptionally alien creatures that, while likely at least as intelligent as a baseline dog and more social, have such an odd neurology uplifting and turning them into an android wasn't an option. So the Imperium did the next best thing: they turned them into pods. The present pod is widespread among the Imperium planetary navy; they are silent, have a radar cross-section that looks like an octopus, and are capable of altering their texture, which makes theme excellent scouts underwater. Attribute Modifiers: ST+1 (Size, -10%) [9]; DX-1 [-20]; HT+1 [10] Advantages: Absolute Direction (Only by Day, -20%) [4]; Chameleon 2 [10]; Constriction Attack [15]; Doesn't Breathe (Oxygen Storage, when out of water, 25x, -50%) [10]; Enhanced Move (Water, x2; Costs Fatigue, 1 FP/minute, -5%) [19]; Extra Arms 6 (Extra-Flexible, +50%; No Wounding, -50%; Modifiers apply to normal arms) [60]; Flexibility [15]; Injury Tolerance (No Neck) [5]; Night Vision 3 [3]; Sensitive Touch [10]; Teeth (Sharp Beak) [1]. Perks: Accessory (Tiny Computer) [1] Disadvantages: Cannot Speak (Mute, Mitigator, -70%) [-8]; Cold-Blooded (Below 50) [-5]; Colorblindness [-10]; Invertebrate [-20]; No Legs (Semi-Aquatic) [0]; Pod Body [-4]; Short-Lifespan 1 [-10]. Features: Individuals of the same model closely resemble each other. Availability: $95,000 + computer Digger-series
99 Points Also Digger is an pod type with heavy cybernetic augmentations that's often seen on Numidia, working to dig up the alien ruins. These squat, broad pods are used for a variety of different reasons; excavations, surface surveys, and general labor by archeological teams. They feature a number of useful adaptations, from large hands that are modified digging claws, allowing them to burrow through loose dirt and sand quickly, to hemoglobin augmentations that allow them to store oxygen longer. While their hands are remarkably large, they are also very flexible, so there's no sacrificing manual dexterity. They also feature a number of in-built cyberentics; these include wrist-mounted tools that can further assist in what the Digger is working on, as well as hyperspectral vision and the ability to filter out dust and other unwanted particles from their lungs. They also undergo extensive deep learning to boost their mining capabilities. Their implanted tool kit is specialized for archaeology and paleontology; specifically, for purposes of the preservation of artifacts and the like (i.e., all DX-based uses of those skills). Attribute Modifiers: ST +1 [10]; HT+1 [10]. Advantages: Basic Biomods [9]; Doesn't Breathe (Oxygen Storage, x25, -50%) [10]; Doesn't Breathe (Oxygen Storage, x25; -50%) [10]; Filter Lungs [5]; Fit [5]; Hyperspectral Vision (Temporary Disadvantage, Electrical, -20%) [20]; Lifting ST +3 [9]; High Manual Dexterity 1 [5]; Immunity to Disease [10]; Nictitating Membrane 3 [3]; Microscopic Vision 1 (Temporary Disadvantage, Electrical -20%) [4]; Tunneling (Loss Grave or Sand Only, -40%) [18] Perks: Accessory (HUD, Wrist Mounted Tools); Sanitized Metabolism [1]. Disadvantages: Blindness (Mitigator, -70%) [-15]; Pod Body [-4]; Social Stigma (Pod) [-10]. Quirks: Attentive, Cautious [-2]. Racial Skills: Engineer/TL10 (Mining) (H) IQ-1 [2]-9. Features: Taboo Trait (Mental Instability); Sexless. Availability: $138,000. LC 3. Hylobatine-series
78 Points The Hylobatine-series of pods are a series of pods that make use of genetics derived from gibbons and siamang. Their size has been increased to roughly the size of a human child and their manipulators have been altered somewhat to provide for better manipulation of objects and tools, but otherwise they remain relatively similar to their gibbon ancestors that they are derived from, with prehensile feet that allows for a second set of hands in microgravity environments and a very loud voice. Attribute Modifiers: ST-2 [-20]; DX+3 [60]; HT+1 [10]. Secondary Characteristics: HP-2 [-4]; Basic Move -2 (Doesn't Affect Climb Speed, -10%) [-9]; SM -1. Advantages: Basic Biomods [19]; Brachiator [5]; Clinging (Requires Handholds, -50%) [10]; Extra Arms 2 (Foot Manipulators, -30%; Short, -50%) [4]; Perfect Balance [15]; Terrain Adaptation (Uneven) [5]. Perks: Fur; Penetrating Voice. [2] Disadvantages: Pod Body [-4]; Semi-Upright [-5]; Social Stigma (Pod) [-10]. Availability: $32,000 + computer. LC 3. Hoku-Hoku
112 Points The Hoku-hoku is a pod derived from a species native to Antigua named the Kintana (Dugyon agasseri). The Kintana is the dominant land organism and is roughly as intelligent as an baseline chimpanzee, and perhaps with a few million more years of evolution, may develop something that resembles a society. However, several xenobiologists figured they would make a good water-based pod, and so created the Hoku-hoku. The Kintana themselves bear a passing resemblance to starfish (Kintana is the Malagasy word for starfish; Hoku-hoku is the Hawaiian word) with six radiating limbs around a central bulge which is dotted with eyes. three of the limbs are large and flat, while three of them are small and thin, that fork into manipulators. They can use the large flat-limbs for locomotion on land, but are much more graceful in the water. On their underside they have a large opening that they eat from; the baseline species is capable of ensnaring prey with its stomach by throwing its whole stomach at an organism. The nervous system is distributed across the entire organism, which made for a huge problem when turning it into a pod. In combat, the Kintana seeks to crush its foes with its large motile limbs, often engulfing creatures smaller than itself and crushing them. They are capable of fashioning primitive tools made of the coral analog, and there is some evidence they are in the process of domesticating some species. The Hoku-hoku pod keeps many of the traits of the original alien species, although it had to deal with a number of significant challenges, the first being its distributed nervous system, which didn't mesh with the cyberbrain properly. Engineers had to reorganize the nervous system so it better fit a cyberbrain. The also had to restructure the digestive tract in the process, which is why the pod lacks the ability to hurl its stomach and engulf prey. The pod is still described as "highly experimental," and while the template below doesn't represent them, there are a number of problems that can creep in, ranging from Bad Grip to Chronic Pain, and even Allergies (either as a quirk or as the Susceptible disadvantage). The poor cyberbrain-body integration can also be represented with the Klutz disadvantage. Attribute Modifiers: ST +6 [60]; DX -1 [-20]; HT +2 [20]. Secondary Characteristic Modifiers: Basic Move -2 (Land Only, -50%) [-5]. Advantages: 365-degree Vision [25]; Amphibious [10]; Basic Biodmods [19]; Chameleon 2 [10]; Constriction Attack [15]; Doesn't Breathe (Gills, -50%) [10]; DR 4 (Tough Skin, -40%) [12]; Extra Arms 1 [10]; Extra Legs 1 [5]; Infravision [10]; Pressure Support 2 [10]; Teeth (Sharp Teeth) [1]; Temperature Tolerance 1 [1]; Vibration Sense (Water) [10]. Perks: Accessory (Tiny Computer) [1]. Disadvantages: Bad Sight (Nearsighted; Out of water only, -40%) [-15]; Mute (Mitigated by computer translator, -60%) [-10]; No Sense of Smell or Taste [-5]; Pod Body [-4]; Social Stigma (Pod) [-10]; Restricted Diet (Unusual Exotic Nutrients, Occasional) [-30]; Very Unusual Biochemistry [-15]; Weak Bite [-2]. Quirks: Nervous Stomach [-1]. Features: Sexless. Available: $275,000 + computer. LC2. Luchador-series 40 Points
There are a number of odd sports in the Verge and Bleed, and low-gravity wrestling is one of them. The Luchador-series of pods are a series of pods by different manufacturers created to capitalize on the low-gravity environments; these freakishly huge pods stand between 15 and 20 feet tall, and are often capable of throwing their opponents incredibly distances during their low gravity wrestling matches. The basic template below can represent any generic model; they are often piloted by AGIs or LAIs who are trained in flamboyant wrestling and boxing styles. Attribute Modifiers: ST+10 (Size, -20%) [80]. Secondary Characteristic Modifiers: SM +2; HP+9 (Size, -20%) [15]. Advantages: Basic Biomods [19]; Damage Resistance 2 (Tough Skin, -40%) [6]; Lifting ST +4 (Size, -20%) [10]; Striking ST 4 (Size, -20%) [16]. Perks: Accessory (Tiny Computer) [1]. Disadvantages: Pod Body [-4]; Weakness (0.5 G or higher gravity; 1d per 30 minutes; Common) [-10]; Social Stigma (Pod) [-10]. Features: Home gravity of 0.14 G (totally nonfunctional in gravity greater than 0.5 G). Available: $275,000 + computer. LC3. Models Bigger Daddy (+28 Points): The Bigger Daddy is designed for MMA exclusively and hits like a dinosaur-killing asteroid; these pods are impressively strong and capable of throwing one another great distances. Increase SM to SM +3 , reflecting bulk more than height, increase ST to ST +15 [+25], Lifting ST +5 (Size, -30%) [+1], and Striking ST +5 (Size, -30%) [+2]. $340,000 + computer. LC3. 168 points. Caryatid (+5 Points): Caryatids are a female-only pod that are beautiful and engage in wrestling matches, often naked. AGIs that pilot these pods often have specially designed cybercores that are identical to their pods to move around in higher gravity with, usually using the Tiqao as a basis. Beautiful as they are, their punch is still capable of crippling an adult human. Add Appearance (Very Beautiful; Off-the-Shelf looks, -50%; Humans Only, -20%) [5]. $340,000 + computer. LC3. 145 points. Kaiju: Kaiju derive their name from the Japanese movie genre of men dressed as monsters stomping around on a soundstage full of village models while pyrotechnics go off around them. Kaiju generally look like giant animals, but however they look, there are three basic models: the Kong, the Gojira, and the Ghidorah. The Kong adds Brachiator [5], Extra Limbs 2 (Foot Manipulators, -30%; Short, -50%) [4], Fur [1], and Penetrating Voice [1] for a total of +10 points (149 points). The Gojira adds Claws (Sharp Claws) [1], Striker (Crushing) [5], Teeth (Fangs) [1], and changes DR to DR (Flexible, -20%) [+2] for a total of +9 points (148 points). The Ghidorah adds Catfall (Parachute, -20%) [8], Extra Head 2 [30], No Manipulators [-50]; and Teeth (Fangs) [1] for a total of +29 points (169 points). Lunchable-series "Sentient Snacks"
-186 Points Sentient snacks are just that: synthetic food snacks that have enough of a cheap, disposable computer so they can display a personality, often designed to look like one of the myriad genotypes or unique creatures in the Verge and Bleed. They are popular in some parts of the Verge Consortium. Attribute Modifiers: ST-7 [-70]; DX-3 [-60]. Secondary Characteristic Modifiers: Basic Move-2 [-10]; SM-6. Features: Early Maturation increased to level 5; Edible, and available in a range of designs and flavors Cost: $5 + enhanced computer if desired. LC 4. Models Animal Crackers (-35 points): A sentient snack shaped like an animal. Add Quadruped [-35]. -221 points. Mandrakes
81 Points Mandrakes are an alien pod designed by the bioengineers of the Sapphire using the native life to the planet. Technically a planimal, Mandrake are developed from a type of semi-sessile plant called a "windbell tree," because it makes the noise of wind chime. Humans who see them often liken them to walking bundles of broccoli, with rounded blue and green shoots that form symmetrical growths around gnarled, stunted trunks. Some branches have flakes of a crystalline material, while a cluster of these branches and flakes are located around a breathing hole at the top of the body; when they speak, they speak through the breathing hole, which produces a pleasant sounded chime noise. Otherwise, speech is assisted through a microphone. Something that resembles a face has been engineered into the main stalk. They have four thick foot-legs and four flexible arm-tentacles. The engineering of mandrakes was actually one of the first steps towards the production of bacterial brains and, eventually, to the projects that would give rise to nymphs and dryads. They tend to be tall and bulky, despite not having much "muscle" mass, starting at about 5'5" and 270lbs. During stressful moments, there can be a disconnect between the natural biochemistry simulated by the cyberbrain and the biochemistry of the alien organism. The result is that the senses malfunction and the two stop communicating, with the pod apparently taking a life of its own. So while it doesn't have stress atavism, the results are functionally the same. Attributes: HT+4 [40]. Secondary Characteristics: HP+4 [8]; Basic Speed -1 [-5]. Advantages: 360-degree vision [25]; Basic Biomods [19]; DR 2 (Flexible, -20%) [8]; Extra Arms (Two, Extra-Flexible, +50%) [30]; Extra-Flexible Arms [10]; Extra Legs (Four) [5]; High Pain Threshold [10]; Injury Tolerance (No Vitals) [5]; Pod Body [1]; Sensitive Touch [10]; Vibration Sense [10]. Medipods
134 Points Deriving from the Ayah-series androids, the Seacole-series "Medipod" is a type of pod that is specialized for medical treatment. They are often used to sleeve dedicated LAIs and NAIs, although in some rare instances, eccentric individuals and doctors may chose them as a body if they go "full cyborg." Functionally they are identical to the Ayah-series androids, with all the same abilities and senses, although they come with a wrist mounted first-aid kit, allowing them to patch up wounds and stabilize dying individuals until they can get back to a medical facility where doctors can heal them. They are also used in surgical theaters, to help surgeons and assist in the surgery if necessary. Attribute Modifiers: HT +2 [20]. Advantages: Appearance (Attractive, Humans Only, -20%) [3]; Basic Biomods [19]; Discriminatory Hearing [15]; Discriminatory Smell (Emotion Sense, +50%) [22]; Less Sleep 2 [4]; Lifting ST +3 [9]; Healer 1 [5]; Infravision [10]; Scanning Sense (Sonar, Reduced Range x1/10, -30%) [14]; Sensitive [5]; Sensitive Touch [10]; Ultrahearing [5]. Novacrab 188 Points
The Novacrab is a specialized pod produced by Ecowave-Symphonia. Using spidercrab and coconut crab DNA, with gene sequences from humans, the Novacrab is a large, 9 foot long crab that can then be outfitted with equipment necessary to operate within low gravity conditions. The Novacrab can cling to any surface so long as it's in low gravity, and it has thick armor around its torso, as well as enhanced movement speed on the ground when in gravity. The Novacrab features ten limbs total; three legs, two large claw-like strikers that can only be used to manipulate large objects (they effectively have Hamfisted [-15] and Bad Grip 2 [-10] with these limbs), as well as two smaller limbs that end in human-like manipulators the crab can use to manipulate objects on a fine level. Novacrabs are a particularly popular model among some spacer communities, especially the Tennyo, where they often have their own variants that they use. While Ecowave-Symphonia hasn't altered the design yet, there's talk of a Novacrab that is capable of functioning underwater, which ES hopes to begin work on after it finishes with its Nemo-series androids. In the mean while, the Novacrab will remain a giant vacuum crab, useful for construction purposes and other EVA activities in space. Attributes: ST+5 (SM, -10%) [45]; DX+2 [40]; HT+2 [20] Characteristics: SM+1 [0]. Advantages: Basic Biomods [19]; Clinging (Requires Low Gravity, 0.2G, -40%) [12]; DR 5 (Can't Wear Armor, -40%; Tough Skin, -40%) [5]; DR 10 (Ablative, -80%, Can't Wear Armor, -40%; Ignores DR 100, +20%, Torso Hit Locations Only, -10%) [10]; Doesn't Breathe (Oxygen Storage x200, -20%) [16]; Enhanced Move (Ground, x0.5) [10]; Extra Legs 6 [10]; High Pain Threshold [10]; Nictitating Membrane 3 [3]; Striker x2 (thrust+1 per die, cr; Limited Arc, Forward, -40%) [6];Temperature Tolerance 10 [10]; Vacuum Support [5]. Perks: Accessory (Tiny Computer) [1]. Disadvantages: Frightens Animals [-10]; Horizontal [-10]; Pod Body [-4]; Social Stigma (Pod)[-10]. Features: Sexless. Cost: $125,000 + Computer. LC 3. Ren-series 39 Points
The Ren-series are functionally human pods. They use the Alpha as a basic model and work from there, opting for athletic, healthy, and attractive pods that can fill most service roles in areas where there is a glut of digital labor looking for a body and androids would be impractical or take too long to make. Outside of obvious seams where the pod was assembled, there isn't much that makes the Ren stand out; it's a perfectly serviceable human pod produced by Nouvel Humain, and has dozens of different models to fill a wide variety of needs. Attribute Modifiers: DX +1 [20]; HT +1 [10]. Advantages: Attractive (Humans Only, -20%) [3]; Basic Biomods [19]. Perks: Accessory (Tiny Computer) [1]. Disadvantages: Pod Body [-4]; Social Stigma (Pod) [-10]. Availability: $2,300 + computer. LC4. LC4. 64 points Knock-offs: While the Nouvel Humain designs can generally be trusted to be of decent quality, that doesn't mean they all are. A number cheap knock off float around the Verge and Bleed, often featuring disadvantages like Addiction, Bad Back, Bad Grip, Bad Smell, Electrical, and the like. Anyone stuck with one of these pods is often first in line to evac it, but far too many are sold as normal, standard pods to those desperate for a body. Reptilopod-series Varies; see subtype
With fast growth rates and strong natural immune systems, reptiles make for excellent bioshells - especially for purpose that can exploit their natural advantages. While the creatures themselves are too stupid to uplift, but find a species with a large enough body that can incorporate a computer and they can be useful. While they don't need to be specially cloned or engineered for the project (engineers can simply place a puppet implant on a normal reptile and then replace parts of the immune system, creating a flesh and blood vehicle that an AGI or digital can then drive like a car), most choose to - in part because it can be faster, and in part because the public perception of such bioshells is that they are deeply creepy and unsettling. The Reptilopods makes use of just such advantages, with two of their models - the Crocshell and the Monitor Monitor - becoming relatively widespread in their popularity. Despite all the advantages, however, One drawback to the reptilian body is its cold-blooded metabolism. To keep this sort of shell useful in cold conditions, bioengineers install a set of “metabolic boosters” – artificial organs that can maintain the creature’s body temperature at the fully active level when required. This enhancement can’t be kept running permanently without damage to the bioshell’s metabolism, and requires regular supplies of high-energy “feedstock” and dietary supplements, but it’s better than having the Reptilopod turn torpid at inconvenient moments. It can also be shut down by the shell’s computer to conserve energy, lowering its food requirements to the normal level for a Cold-Blooded creature (which combines with the creature’s Cast-Iron Stomach to make its food requirements very economical). Even with the enhancement, though, a Reptilopod isn’t really much use in colder worlds with temperatures comparable to Northern Europe or Canada; its “native temperature” for game purposes is somewhere in the tropical range. Crocoshell 107 Points Alligators and crocodiles make excellent examples of potential reptile-based pods; they are formidable ambush predators and are tough, adapted to the realities of an aquatic lifestyle, and have mouths full of very sharp teeth. The shell benefits from their natural senses, although in that same turn, it also suffers from their limitations, as well. While it's called a "crocoshell," it's actually a genetic hybrid, incorporating genes from multiple different sources. The shell is sometimes employed by wealthy elite and leaders who want interesting body guards, while zoologists might employ them to operate in the wild. AGIs are most commonly sleeved inside the pods, since few folks desire spending time as a crocogator or allidile. The model is produced by Ecowave-Symphonia. Models VacuCroc (+49):The VacuCroc pod takes a page from the Novacrab and turns what's normally an aquatic creature into a creature adapted to the vacuum of space. Admittedly a niche product at best, some eccentrics like the idea of having AGIs sleeved inside of vacuum-adapted crocodiles crawling around the exterior of their crafts, and as noted above, its food requirements tend to make up for the mass that the crocodile adds to the ship's cargo. Monitor Monitor 119 Points The so-called Monitor Monitor pod is based on the largest extant species of monitor lizards on Earth, the Komodo dragon, and it exploits that animals robust constitution, combat capabilities, and other natural advantages that being a big scary predator provides. This pod is most often used as a guard, since it is frequent fast, tough, and sneaky - just like the real Komodo dragon. It's also illegal in most habitats without a muzzle due to its dangerous toxic bite, which the engineers fully replicated. The Monitor Monitor is a popular pod within leadership in the Imperium, who use combat LAIs to pilot them and often equip them with weapon hardpoints. It's rumored that Saminov also keeps Monitor Monitors on hand, and he feeds his political opponents to them. The model is produced by Ecowave-Symphonia. SauroPods 81 Points Just like with conventional reptiles, a great many of the reverse engineered dinosaurs were too stupid to uplift as well, even with human genetics added in. However, many were ideal pods, for the same exact reason: large enough to house a computer, big enough to make it justifiable, and dumb enough that a sophisticated chatbot is an improvement in overall intellectual capability. SauroPods, as they're collectively called, are not all Sauropods; in fact, few of them are. They're called SauroPods because the company that designed, SauroTek, enjoys bad puns and named them after themselves (SauroTek is a merchant company with the Autocracy that only operates within the Autocracy). For instance, the one below is derived from a reconstructed Protoceratops. It's one of the more commonly seen pods, since it's small and its weight, barely over 400 pounds, is manageable for all but the smallest of ships to compensate for, and few ships have qualms about letting a quadruped aboard (where as they may take issue with a much more dangerous Velicopod or Allosauropod). The model doesn't handle microgravity well, however, so it's recommended that anyone occupying a CeraPod put themselves into sleep mode or upload themselves into a digital computer and allow the body to rest in freefall during that time. As herbivores, they can only eat fresh greens. Attribute Modifiers: ST+4 (No Fine Manipulators, -40%; Size, -10%) [20]; DX+2 (No Fine Manipulators, -40%) [12]; HT+3 [30]. Models Pteranopod (-18 Points): The Pteranopod is the most common model seen out of the Autocracy and is possibly the Autocracy's greatest gift to the Verge and Bleed. This is a pod modeled after the classic Pteranodon, although the wingspan has been scaled back from the impressive 25 feet of the original to a more modest 10 feet, making it less than half the size of the prehistoric creature that it's modeled after. Because of this, it's also one of the cheaper pods on the market. Delete ST bonus [-20], Striker (Tail) [-2], add ST -4 [-40], DX +2 [+24], Basic Move -4 (Ground Only, -50%) [-10], and Flight (Winged, -25%) [30]. Replace Enhanced Move (Ground) with Enhanced Move (Air). $4,000 + computer. LC4. 64 points. Scurrier 89 Points
Native to the forests of Haplopelma, the Scurrier pod is derived from a pre-sapient species of six-legged, large, omnivorous gliding squirrel-like mammal organisms called the Okere (Scuriformes simitimus). It features a long, prehensile tail that it can use to hang from branches, and its six limbs end in six manipulators that, while not the best, are functionally similar to those on a raccoon. Overall, humans tend to find the creature rather adorable, and that it uses a system similar to DNA as a means for storing genetic information makes it one of the more human-like aliens yet discovered. When designing the pod, engineers first set about editing the genes in the hands so they worked better as manipulators, and then did light editing of facial features so humanity could better recognize the faces of the organisms, along with remodeled transgenic vocal cords. Somewhere along the way, it was given a voice similar to a child who has inhaled irresponsible amounts of helium. Nobody is sure who thought that was a good idea. Their ears, which are similar to cat-like ears, provide excellent hearing, allowing them to zero-in on noises, and their sense of touch draw further parallels with raccoons, although they have a very poor sense of sight that engineers could do little to fix without redesigning the entire eye-nervous system interface, and since that's still poorly understood, engineers would rather leave them with some sight than produce a batch of pods with no sight at all. The Taniwha series is another pod series put out by Ecowave-Symphonia, and was the first model before they struck pay dirt with the exceptionally odd Gillmorph android. The pod is basically the pod form of an orca, or a killer whale, with very little added to it or changed about it. The design was originally produced by ES to help NanoSysBio repair underwater habitats that were damaged during the Ascension Crisis, but the bioshell is popular all the same among LAIs that were designed off basic dolphin or cetacean psychology, and among some digitals who just want to see what it feels like to be a massive killer whale. In some instances, militaries and navies in the Verge and Bleed use it for military purposes. Attribute Modifiers: ST+35 (No Fine Manipulators, -40%; Size, -40%) [70]; HT+5 [50]. 62 Points The Wheelie is an alien planimal pod that borrows genetics from the planimal species already native to Sapphire, like the Mandrake and Whiplash (see below). The original organism was a motile root-like structure with a barrel-like torso mounted upright on four larger, inflatable, "pontoon" like organs that allowed them to float along the oceans. The trilobed face pointed "downward," into the ocean, and a long feeding tendril was used to snap prey out of the water. The modern wheelies lack the long tendril, and their posture has been oriented so the body is facing upright and slightly forward, in a manner reminiscent of a Whiplash's posture. However, instead of motile tendrils, the pontoon-like organs have been modified so they can rotate around a biological axel, allowing them to become a set of biological wheels. This gives them four large wheels that they can move around on instead of motile tendrils. They also feature six grasping arms. However, they are not nearly as durable nor are engineers would have liked; organism lacks the hydrostatic ability to absorb shock damage and is very rigid and the "bone" tissue is very weak and prone to breaking. Furthermore, they require near constant maintenance, as the ligaments tear and the axles wear down and need to be repaired. They are not nearly as effective as wheeled cybershells, and as a result, are usually used as an oddity and little else. Furthermore, they can't ascend stairs. During stressful moments, it's possible for the biochemistry simulated by the cyberbrain and the native biochemistry to cease communicating, which results in the pod taking on a life of its own until the connection can be re-established. So while they don't have Stress Atavism, the result is functionally the same. Attributes: ST -3 [-30]; DX+1 [20]; IQ-3 [-60]; HT-2 [-20]. Quirks: Cannot ascend stairs [-1]. Features: Sexless Availability: $450,000 +computer, LC 2. Whiplash 135 Points
The Whiplash is a lot like the Mandrake, and is also from Sapphire. Whiplash pods are sometimes used for rangers and the like for the ability to blend in, and they've proven remarkably popular with the Worldtree religion. The primary modification to whiplash stock was to turn the entire organism upside down and orient the digestive portion of the organism horizontally, so the trilobed orifices face forward. Engineers edited the "grasping roots" so they could function as motile "walking tentacles", and added a pair of grasping limbs, each with four opposable digits; artificial sensing mods (providing human-standard sensing abilities) and a general lengthening of the internal structure to provide rigidity and support were also also performed. The barrel-like body of the original organism remains unchanged and the digestive system also remains largely unchanged, reorientation not withstanding. Finally, the feeding tendril was heavily enhanced, so it can act more like a two-meter long chameleon like tongue. During stressful moments, it's possible for the biochemistry simulated by the cyberbrain and the native alien biochemistry to cease communicating, with the pod apparently taking on a life of its own, operating off reflexive memory and its own unique plant-based neurology until communication can be re-established. So while it doesn't have Stress Atavism per se, the results are functionally the same. Attributes: ST+4 [40]; DX+1 [20]; HT+4 [40] Secondary Characteristics: Basic Speed -2 [-10].
