ChiropteranBIomorph [Genotype, Parahuman Rianth]One of the first deliberate human-animal splices - or rianths, a clipping of therianthrope - and one of the oldest in the sphere, the Chiropteran (sometimes called Camazotz) feature large wings in place of arms, which allows them to fly in microgravity and in low gravity. They also feature a number of other bat-like features, which is why they're often referred to as "bat people" by those who regularly deal with them. When they first appeared is a matter of speculation, but they were mentioned in the historical record as far back as the Second Interstellar Period, although in these records, they're mentioned as androids, not as a genotype. Modern Chiropterans are a human off-shoot.
As can be surmised by their appearance, they have a sizeable percentage of bat genes spliced into their genome (generally from the megabat). In addition to the aforementioned wings, they have large, rounded ears fags, and soft fur, as well as a modified voice box with natural sonar abilities. This gives them high pitched voices that are not unpleasant, but are still higher pitched than most normal people are used to dealing with. There are a number of off-shoots, both in terms of clades an entirely different variants, that are usually engineered by the bat people themselves; some wryly note that the bat-people are developing their own civilization in parallel with humanity, but most regard Chiropterans as a branch of humanity proper. Chriopteran VAriants and fAmily
Like most niche genotypes and variants, there hasn't been a lot of diversification among the genotype, or if there has, they aren't very common as a genotype. Still, there are a small number of variants known, mostly from databases and recordings, which means that their may be more somewhere in the Verge and Bleed.

An android variant of the Chiropteran; often designed for work in microgravity or in beehive habitats. Delete Unusual Biochemistry [+5] and add Android Body [-4] and Basic Biomods [30]. 72 points.
A Chimeric version of the Chiropteran, even more rare than the android version that forcibly merges the embryo of a fox bat and a human together. It's much less common than simply producing an android version, and tends to result in health issues even when done correctly. Add Restricted Diet (Very Common; Substitution, - 50%) [-5], Sterile [0], and Unusual Biochemistry [-5]. 6 points. A bioshell variant of the Chiropteran, remarkably rare but still possible. Delete Unusual Biochemistry [+5] and add Bioshell Body [9], Basic Biomods [30], Basic Mesh Inserts [26], and Cortical Stack [6]. 117 points. A pod variant of the Chiropteran, common in areas where the android variant might see use but where the labor just isn't there to handle it. Delete Unusual Biochemistry [+5] and add Pod Body [-7], Basic Biomods [30], Basic Mesh Inserts [26], Cortical Stack [6], Restricted Diet (Very Common, Pod Food) [-10], and Social Stigma (Pod) [-10]. 81 points. |
Megalopteran [Android, Exotic] |
69 Points |
The only known variant of the Chriopteran and likely a pre-run early variant, the Megalopterian are like Chriopterans but scaled up to be much later; the average Megalopterian is roughly 9 feet tall. They also feature more characteristic snub noses and flat faces with pointy teeth, much like a vampire bat. The precise reason that Megalopterians were created is unknown; they probably emerged sometime during the late Interplanetary period and may have been an "artistic android creation," although their strength makes them somewhat decent for muscular labor as well. They cannot fly outside of microgravity, and most don't even try. They also don't have a reputation for being terribly bright, although they are highly devoted to a task and are very protective of their homes and the things that they keep in those homes.
As far as anyone knows, this android type is extinct and has been since the Utopian Era, but it still exists on numerous databanks throughout the Verge and Bleed.
