NymphBiomorph [Bioshell, exotic]Nymphs are an offshoot of the program that created their sisters, the Dryads. The design goal was similar - produce a biological brain that didn't come with a consciousness already in it - but the designers chose a different starting point: the the aquatic phytoplankton-like organisms named Meleagranus maritima. M. maritima is considerably different from I. unicentris, the organism that was used in Dryads, and the designers made the choice to use less human tissue and more terragenic plant-based tissue for the biological neural network, instead. A modified female exalt was printed and the brain inserted into, and the results were, predictably, the same: a human-like intelligence, self-aware and cognizant, emerged from the biological brain. Similarly, this project was also declared a failure.
Nymphs and Dryads, despite sharing a similar origin, are only superficially similar in terms of somatic modifications. Nymphs are much closer to aquanauts, with hairless bodies, collagen enriched skin, and webbed toes and fingers, along with the ability to store oxygen in modified liver and blood tissue. They also have collapsing lungs which allows them to control their buoyancy. Like Dryads, Nymphs are often startlingly beautiful, living up to their name. Engineers even included perfume glands. However, where Nymphs and Dryads really diverge is cognitively; Nymphs feature less human brain material in them that Dryads do, which mean Nymphs often diverge further from the baseline human norm, and often develop a number of odd outlooks, habits, and tastes that they can't really account for. Despite this, or perhaps because of it in some situations, Nymphs became more popular than Dryads and so there are a fair number that exist in the Verge and Bleed today. Interesting Facts
