RusterBiomorph [Genotype, Econiche]The Ruster genotype is an old genotype; probably the fourth or fifth econiche genotype that was developed, and it first emerged on Mars. However, it was adapted for other, related worlds as well, and soon it became a common genotype throughout the Verge and Bleed, since worlds without Earth-like atmospheres are more rare than those who have earth-like atmospheres. The first generation of Rusters were actually a genetic upgrade referred as the "Carter"-series, which were humans adapted for Mars. They blended genetics from Inuit, Andeans, and Native Australians and Melanesian people, to produce cold-resistant, high altitude-adapted, dark-skinned individuals that could tolerate the conditions on Mars slightly better than a typical genetic upgrade. The Tholis-series upgrade came next and that was a full parahuman, but it was quickly supplanted by the Ruster as the terraforming of Mars fully started. Since then, the Carter-series and the Tholis-series have been completely supplanted, with the Ruster having long since surpassed them both.
The Ruster features a number of genetic augmentation with the intent of producing a human that could survive with relatively little assistance on a partially terraformed Mars. To this end, the Ruster is well-adapted to cold temperatures, but the major alteration is to their lungs; their lungs feature transgenic filters that let them filter out CO2 from the atmosphere; however, in doing this, their metabolism increases, increasing the amount of food that they need to consume. Early generations were only adapted to thin pressures, with thin-atmosphere lungs, but ever since the Utopian Era, the alterations have skewed more towards producing a human with lungs capable of surviving a wide range of environments. The result is a human who can break in normal and thin atmospheric conditions, but in conditions with a great deal of CO2 - such as a base with a broken filter - their lungs filter out more of the CO2, giving them a better chance to get to somewhere with normal oxygen levels. This ability to breathe across a wide range of pressures has made them a valuable genotype, probably the second or third most common genotype in the entire Verge and Bleed, with a number of spin offs and alterations.
